Missing teeth solutions - dentures

If you are self-conscious because of multiple missing teeth, dentures may present an initial or temporary solution to give your confidence a boost and restore your smile. The first of three options in our missing teeth series.

Dentures can either be made of acrylic (plastic) or metal and there are two types of dentures that can restore your smile. A ‘complete’ or ‘full’ denture replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. A ‘partial’ denture fills in the spaces left by lost or missing teeth. It may be fastened to your natural teeth with metal clasps or ‘precision attachments’.

        The benefits of dentures

        • If you choose full dentures to replace your missing teeth, they fit snuggly over your gums and will help you to eat comfortably and speak more clearly, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
        • Usually dentures can be fitted straight after your teeth have been removed, so are an immediate solution. You’ll need to visit your dental team beforehand for them to take measurements and impressions of your mouth.
        • If you have a partial denture, this will prevent the teeth around the gaps in your mouth from moving into the empty space - preventing crooked or tilted teeth.
        • A complete or full denture gives support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can alter your appearance and you may find it harder to speak properly.
        • Modern dentures can also improve the look of your smile and help fill out the appearance of your face.

Fitting and taking care for of your dentures

Your denture is personal to you and your dentist will take measurements and impressions of your mouth, which will then be used to order your dentures from a dental technician.

Dentures are custom made to fit your mouth, so you shouldn’t need to worry about using a denture fixative, but if your denture is loose fitting it may be time to get it replaced - a poorly-fitted denture can cause irritation and sores.

Once your dentures are fitted and your smile and confidence restored, you will still need to take good care of your mouth.

Every morning and evening you should brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth with a soft brush. This will remove plaque and help the blood circulation in your gums and mouth.

If you wear partial dentures, it is even more important that you brush your teeth thoroughly every day. This will help stop tooth decay and gum disease that can lead to you losing more of your teeth. Your dentist may refer you to the hygienist to have your remaining natural teeth cleaned regularly.

If you look after your dentures, they can help you maintain your smile for several years. Your dentures will need to be relined or re-built because of normal wear, or changes in the shape of your mouth.
